These computers are owned, maintained and serviced by a specialist company, known as a host. They serve up content to a particular location on the Internet and are referred to as commercial Web servers or DNS Servers.

Today, your domain name is a valuable part of your over-all marketing strategy.

Companies and individuals can register a domain name in either one of the Top Level Domains (TLD - i.e.: .com, .net, .org, .biz, etc.) or in their countries Country Code TLD (ccTLD - i.e.: .ca, .us, .jp, etc.). There are many different registrars out there, most of whom can register your domain name in any or all of those TLD's. (Most ccTLD's have residency requirements). No matter who you register your domain name with, once registered, you own the name but will be required to renew registration on a regular basis (1 year, 3 years, 5 years, etc.)

But owning the name is only half of the game. Once you have your Domain Name registered, you must then have it assigned to "point" or reference the Hosting Computer that houses your website (the DNS Server - see above). You can locate your server anywhere in the world, and a shared, frequently updated database throughout the Internet, the Global DNS Record, "remembers" that a specific name is located on a specific machine. Your domain name is totally portable, and can be moved from one server to another at any time, although the change may actually take up to 72 hours as the Global DNS Record becomes updated.
