web design
Using Internet technologies as our tools, we help companies increase customer value, increase the preceived value of your company, and maximize the return on your investment.
Web design is our bread and butter - but we know that there are literally hundreds if not thousands of other small web design companies out there. Why should you choose bytown internet?
For us, the answer is simple - we develop websites, we don't just design them. It's a subtle thing, we know, but it's important. The internet is not print, it's not televison, it's a whole new medium with it's own strengths and weaknesses. Designing websites is a multi-disiciplinary effort; good websites are more than just pretty. Good websites combine information, technology and design. Good websites are compelling, interesting, concise, informative, usable - in short, they just work. They focus on the end user - your customers!
The purpose of your website is not to show off our design or art skills, nor flaunt our coding trickery; the purpose of your website is to high-light YOUR BUSINESS!
Your website is a reflection of who you are and of your business. It allows your customers to find out more about you, to interact with your business any time of day or night. Experience and research tells us that most people turn to the internet, not for entertainment, but for information. Time and time again, the top complaints about websites are that they are slow, confusing, hard to use.
Our philosophy is pretty simple: we create websites that are fast, focused, and easy to use. We've been doing it for over 8 years, and we'd love to do it for your business too!

Compare Apples to Apples!
When shopping for a new or re-developed website, there are a few questions you should be asking. Will your new site have...
- a user-friendly design?
- web image optimization?
- scalable architecture?
- Search Engine keywords?
- a P3P privacy policy?
- PICS labeling?
- compliance to industry technical standards?
Don't get us wrong - we appreciate great looking websites. We understand and value the time and effort that goes into the visual design of a website. The science and art of colour, layout, typography are all important considerations when developing your site. As part of every project we work on, we spend time working with you to understand your vision of how your site should look. Each new project starts with a series of sketches, where we explore issues such as colors, imagery, design. We listen to your thoughts, offering suggestions and ideas along the way. Your input is important - and that's something we never forget!
However, developing a website is more than just art. It's also about understanding issues like site navigation, usability, technology. It's about knowing what tools are available for any given job, and using those tools effectively. It's knowing what things work, and what things don't; and why. We've made it a point of understanding the dynamics of web site usage - how and why some sites work better than others. We're sure you know what we mean... you've probably seen and visited websites that were a pleasure to use, and others that left you frustrated, bewildered, un-fulfilled. Which would you rather have representing your business?
technology is important
Internet technologies have come a long way in a short period of time. Using these technologies to maximize your website is an important part of the overall development process.
As part of our previous development projects, we have successfully used a diverse variety of web technologies, including Flash, QuickTime, Real Audio and more. Many of these technologies are showcased on our client solutions section.
"I'm not selling to the blind so why should I go to the trouble of making my site accessible?" Why? Because the most powerful Internet force known to God and man visits your web pages like blind people -- Google. Google is blind and reads your sites linearly -- as the code is sent to the browser -- and then tries to interpret what it "sees". Google doesn't care how pretty your page looks: Google cares about content.- Vincent Flanders
Regardless of the technologies we use, each and every website we create conforms to current industry Standards - ensuring that your website works for all users. As an added bonus, all of our websites meet or exceed Web Accessibility Guidelines; increasingly important to companies and organizations who are covered by legislation such as the Ontarians with Disabiities Act (ODA) - all of our sites are accessible to all, regardless of any disability they may have.
Finally, all of our websites feature a comprehensive set of policy guidelines which add to the overall value of your website. We encourage you to see the website policies of this site for more information.
search engine friendly
The internet has tens of millions of websites at this point; growth is exponential and bibliographic control does not exist. To find the proverbial needle in this immense haystack (or tiny fly in the Web), most users today rely on search engines and directories such as Yahoo, AltaVista or Google. Ensuring that your website is search engine friendly is crucial!
All search engines do keyword searches against their database, but various factors influence the results from each. Size of the database, frequency of update, search capability and design, and speed may lead to amazingly different results. Furthermore, different Search Engines use different methods to harvest, classify and index these keywords.
Web Developers have a number of methods of improving their placement within these indexes, although there is no "guaranteed method" of preferential or top placement in any search engine. These include the insertion of "meta data" encoded within the web page, as well as remembering to register their web site with the different search engines.
